Groovy Posts of Christmas Past: The Savage Barry (Windsor-) Smith

Happy Holidays, Groove-ophiles! For the rest of the week we're gonna be showcasing Posts of Christmas Past--in other words, re-runs or reprints of some of Ol' Groove's fave posts from Decembers other than this one. ;D Hope you enjoy 'em!

This one's from December 26, 2012!

Happy Holidays, Groove-ophiles! How 'bout some Barry Windsor-Smith to groove to as we wind down from our big Christmas day? The early issues of Savage Tales were filled to the brim with Barry's sensational stylings--from the scintillating splashes of "The Frost Giant's Daughter" and "Red Nails" to the pieces of Conan art used to decorate ads, articles, and such. Wanna see?

  1. I was and still am a HUGE Conan fan, but Barry Smith's art always left me cold, was never a fan of his work.

    1. Why is that? After he shed his Kirby clone style I find his every project delightful. By the time of Conan # 24 his Raphael-like style was one of the high points of the Bronze Age.

  2. How exciting for me to have actually experienced these now classic stories as they were occurring. It's nice to think back to a time when (just) Smith, Adams, Brunner, Starlin, Gulacy and Ploog were producing work on a regular basis.

As for the rest of ya, the purpose of this blog is to (re)introduce you to the great comics of the 1970s. If you like what you see, do what I do--go to a comics shop, bookstore, e-Bay or whatever and BUY YOUR OWN!
